History

The Vienna State Opera was inaugurated in 1869, built at the command of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Designed by architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, the building was the first major structure erected on the Ringstrasse boulevard. During World War II, the Opera was severely damaged by bombings in 1945. Its reconstruction took 10 years, and it reopened in 1955 with a performance of Beethoven's opera "Fidelio". Throughout its history, the Vienna State Opera has hosted premieres of famous operas and has been led by renowned conductors such as Gustav Mahler and Herbert von Karajan.
