History

Taronga Zoo was officially opened on October 7, 1916, after the animals were moved from the old Moore Park Zoo in Sydney. The name "Taronga" comes from the Aboriginal language and means "beautiful view" (pronounced tuh-rong-guh). In the 1920s and 1930s, the zoo underwent significant expansion, adding new habitats and species. During World War II, Taronga played an important role in maintaining public morale. The 1960s marked the beginning of a new era for Taronga, with a focus on conservation and education. In 2000, the zoo underwent a major renovation to improve facilities and visitor experience. Today, Taronga Zoo is recognized worldwide for its conservation and research programs, contributing to the preservation of many endangered species.
