Access

The library is easily accessible by public transport. Melbourne Central metro station is a 2-minute walk away. Trams 1, 3/3a, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 stop in front of the library on Swanston Street. Paid parking is available nearby, but public transport is recommended due to heavy traffic in the city center.

Hours: Monday-Thursday 10:00-21:00, Friday-Sunday 10:00-18:00. Closed on public holidays. General admission is free, but some special exhibitions may require tickets. Photography is allowed in most areas, except for special collections. Free audio guides are available at the reception. Quiet is requested in the reading rooms. Free Wi-Fi available throughout the building.

History

State Library Victoria was founded in 1854, just three years after the state of Victoria separated from New South Wales. Initially called Melbourne Public Library, the institution was created with the vision of providing free access to knowledge for all citizens. The main building, designed by Joseph Reed, was opened in 1856. Over the years, the library has expanded considerably, adding new wings and collections. In 1913, the famous La Trobe Reading Room opened, with its impressive dome. In the 1990s and 2000s, the library underwent several major renovations to adapt to the digital era while maintaining its historic character. In 2019, an 88 million Australian dollar redevelopment project was completed, modernizing facilities and public spaces.
