In 1797, after the French Revolution, the complex was transformed into a civil hospital, functioning as such until 1980. After the hospital's closure, local authorities decided to transform this historic site into a museum dedicated to the city's history. The renovation and adaptation project lasted several years, preserving the building's valuable architectural elements while integrating modern facilities necessary for a contemporary museum. The opening of STAM in 2010 marked an important moment in preserving and promoting Ghent's cultural heritage.
