History

STAM City Museum opened in 2010, but its history is closely tied to its location. The main building of the museum is the former Bijloke Abbey, founded in the 13th century as a hospital. In 1797, after the French Revolution, the complex was transformed into a civil hospital, functioning as such until 1980. After the hospital's closure, local authorities decided to transform this historic site into a museum dedicated to the city's history. The renovation and adaptation project lasted several years, preserving the building's valuable architectural elements while integrating modern facilities necessary for a contemporary museum. The opening of STAM in 2010 marked an important moment in preserving and promoting Ghent's cultural heritage.
