Good To Know

Skanderbeg Square is open 24/7, being a public space. The best time to visit is early morning or evening when the temperature is more pleasant. During summer, temperatures can be very high, so it's recommended to wear a hat and apply sunscreen. There are many cafes and restaurants around the square where you can cool off. Be careful with your pockets in crowded areas, as in any tourist center.

History

Skanderbeg Square takes its name from the Albanian national hero Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, whose equestrian statue dominates the center of the square. Initially built in the 1920s, under the rule of King Zog I, the square has undergone numerous transformations over time. During the communist period, under Enver Hoxha's regime, the square was expanded and remodeled to host parades and demonstrations. After the fall of communism in 1991, the square continued to be the center of public and political life in Tirana. In 2010, a major renovation project began, completed in 2017, which radically transformed the appearance and functionality of the square, bringing it to modern standards of urban design and sustainability.
