Good To Know

Schedule: Open daily 10:00-17:00, except for Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Access to the Observation Balcony is allowed until 16:45. Visitors are asked to maintain a respectful attitude, as it is a place of commemoration. Decent attire is recommended. Photography is allowed in most areas, except for the Sanctuary.

History

The Shrine of Remembrance was conceived in 1918, at the end of World War I, as a response to the profound national mourning. Construction began in 1928 and was completed in 1934. The project was carried out by architects Phillip Hudson and James Wardrop, both war veterans. Initially dedicated to those who fell in World War I, the monument was later expanded to include all conflicts in which Australia has been involved. In 2003, an underground visitor center was added, modernizing the facilities and enhancing the educational experience. The Shrine of Remembrance has become not just a place of commemoration, but also an important educational and cultural center for Melbourne and all of Australia.
