Good To Know

Visiting hours: Monday-Thursday and Saturday 8:00-18:00, Friday 13:00-18:00, Closed on Sundays and holidays. The gardens are open daily from 6:00 until dark. Photographs are allowed outside, but prohibited inside. During concerts and special events, access may be limited. Comfortable footwear is recommended for walking in the gardens.

History

The history of Mirabell Palace begins in 1606, when Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau built it for his lover, Salome Alt. Initially named Altenau, the palace was renamed Mirabell by Wolf Dietrich's successor, Markus Sittikus von Hohenems. In 1710, the palace was completely remodeled in baroque style by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. A devastating fire in 1818 destroyed much of the structure, but it was rebuilt under the direction of Peter de Nobile. In 1854, the palace became the property of the city of Salzburg. During World War II, Schloss Mirabell suffered minor damage but was quickly restored. Today, the palace houses the mayor's office and the municipal council of Salzburg.
