History

The Salzburg Marionette Theatre was established in 1913 by Anton Aicher, a passionate puppetry enthusiast. Initially, performances were held in a small hall in the center of Salzburg. During World War II, the theatre suffered damage but was quickly restored and resumed its activities. In 1971, the theatre moved to its current location, a specially constructed building next to the Mirabell Garden. Over the years, the theatre has gained international recognition, touring worldwide and receiving numerous awards for artistic excellence. In 2016, UNESCO recognized the art of puppetry in Salzburg as intangible cultural heritage, highlighting the importance and uniqueness of this tradition.
