The cathedral is located in the historic center of Ghent. By public transport: trams 1, 2 and 4 stop at the "Korenmarkt" station, a few minutes' walk away. By car: there are several public parking lots nearby, the closest being "Parking Sint-Baafs". On foot: the cathedral is easily accessible from any point in the historic center.

History

The history of Saint Bavo's Cathedral begins in the 10th century, when a wooden chapel dedicated to Saint John the Baptist stood on the current site. In the 12th century, it was replaced by a Romanesque church, which was in turn rebuilt and expanded in Gothic style in the following centuries. The cathedral was consecrated in 1559 and dedicated to Saint Bavo. During the French Revolution, the cathedral suffered significant damage, with many of its treasures stolen or destroyed. However, in the 19th century, it was extensively restored. In 1559, it became the seat of the newly created Diocese of Ghent. Throughout the centuries, the cathedral has witnessed important historical events and survived wars and revolutions, remaining a symbol of resilience and faith for the community of Ghent.
