King Leopold II significantly expanded and renovated the palace at the end of the 19th century, giving it the grand appearance it has today. During World War I, the palace was used as a hospital. After the war, King Albert I continued the renovation and modernization work. Currently, the palace remains the ceremonial center of the Belgian monarchy, hosting numerous state events and official visits.
