History

The Royal Exhibition Building was constructed in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition of 1880. Designed by architect Joseph Reed, the building was conceived to rival other exhibition structures around the world. In 1901, it hosted the first session of the Australian Parliament, marking the birth of the Australian Federation. Over the years, the building has served various purposes, including as a hospital during the Spanish flu pandemic of 1919. In 1984, an extensive restoration process began, which returned the building to its original glory. In 2004, the Royal Exhibition Building became the first site in Australia to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, recognizing its exceptional historical and architectural importance.
