History

The history of Residenzplatz is closely tied to the development of Salzburg as a center of ecclesiastical power. The square was laid out in the 16th century under the leadership of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who wanted to transform Salzburg into a "Rome of the North". In 1661, under the reign of Prince-Archbishop Guidobald von Thun, the impressive Residenzbrunnen fountain was built, which dominates the center of the square. Over the centuries, Residenzplatz has witnessed important historical events, including imperial visits and public proclamations. During World War II, the square suffered damage but was carefully restored to preserve its original splendor.
