The reserve can be accessed by bus, lines 4, 8, 20, 61, 62, 64, 86, 129, and 152 stop nearby. The nearest metro station is Estación Catalinas (Line E), about 1 km away. Parking is available for visitors coming by car, but spaces may be limited on busy days. A popular option is renting a bicycle and using the city's bike lanes to reach the reserve.

Good To Know

The Buenos Aires Ecological Reserve is open daily from 8:00 to 18:00 during winter and until 19:00 during summer. Entry is allowed up to one hour before closing. Wearing comfortable footwear and clothes suitable for nature walks is recommended. Bring water, sun protection, and mosquito repellent, especially during warm months. Bicycles are allowed on certain marked trails. Photography is permitted, but do not disturb the wildlife. Weekends can be more crowded, so weekday visits are recommended for a quieter experience.

History

Reserva Ecológica Costanera Sur was unexpectedly created in the 1970s when an urban development project was abandoned. The area, initially intended for city expansion into the river, was left untouched, allowing nature to reclaim the land. In 1986, it was officially declared an ecological reserve, recognizing its importance for biodiversity and the environment. Over the years, the reserve has become a model of urban conservation and natural regeneration. In 2005, it was designated a Ramsar site, highlighting its international importance as a wetland. Today, it represents a remarkable example of how nature can thrive even in the midst of a large metropolitan city.
