History

Red Star Line was a maritime transport company founded in 1871, which operated between Antwerp and New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. Between 1873 and 1934, approximately 2 million passengers traveled on Red Star Line ships to North America. The buildings that house the museum today were built in 1894 and served as a processing center for emigrants. After decades of abandonment, Antwerp authorities decided in 2004 to transform these historic buildings into a museum. The restoration and transformation project took almost a decade, and the museum officially opened in September 2013, quickly becoming an important attraction for tourists interested in the history of migration and maritime transport.
