History

Queen Victoria Building was initially constructed as a shopping center between 1893-1898, during an economic depression, with the aim of creating jobs. Designed by architect George McRae in Romanesque style, the building was dedicated to Queen Victoria. Over the years, QVB has undergone several transformations. In the 1930s, it was threatened with demolition but was saved due to community efforts. In the 1980s, the building underwent a major restoration, costing 86 million Australian dollars, restoring it to its original glory. This renovation transformed QVB into a luxury shopping center and major tourist attraction, while preserving its distinctive historical features.
