Puerto Madero is easily accessible by public transport. The nearest metro station is Plaza de Mayo (line A), from where you can walk about 15 minutes. Buses 4, 20, 33 and 64 stop in the area. Puerto Madero is open 24/7, being a modern district of Buenos Aires. It is recommended to visit both during the day, to admire the architecture, and in the evening, when the area becomes very lively. The best season for visiting is spring (September-November) or autumn (March-May), when temperatures are pleasant. Casual clothing is appropriate. The area is considered safe, but as in any big city, caution is advised late in the evening.

History

Puerto Madero was originally built at the end of the 19th century as the main port of Buenos Aires to handle the growing maritime trade. However, the port quickly became outdated and inefficient due to insufficient depth for modern ships. In the 1920s, the port was abandoned in favor of a new port further north. The area remained neglected until the 1990s when the Argentine government initiated a large-scale urban regeneration project. The plan involved converting old warehouses into luxury commercial and residential spaces while preserving the historic character of the buildings. The project also included the construction of modern skyscrapers, parks, and waterfront promenades. The transformation of Puerto Madero is considered a successful example of urban rehabilitation, becoming one of the most expensive and sought-after neighborhoods in Buenos Aires.
