History
The Plantin-Moretus Museum has its origins in the 16th century, when Christophe Plantin founded his printing press in Antwerp in 1555. Plantin quickly became one of the most important printers and publishers of his time, and his business continued to thrive under the leadership of his son-in-law, Jan Moretus, and his descendants. The Plantin-Moretus family ran the printing press for three centuries, until 1876, when the last descendant sold the property to the city of Antwerp. In 1877, the house and workshops were opened to the public as a museum. The museum was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, becoming the first museum in the world to receive this distinction. Its unique collection includes two of the oldest printing presses in the world, dating from the 16th century, as well as extensive archives documenting the history of printing and book trade in Europe.
