History

Over the years, the Obelisk has witnessed many important historical and cultural events. In 1938, it was temporarily covered to look like a giant candle as part of an advertising campaign. During the military dictatorship of the '70s and '80s, it was frequently the site of human rights protests. In 2005, the Obelisk was temporarily transformed into a giant pencil for a literacy campaign.
