Its construction was part of the communist regime's efforts to promote national identity and present Albania's history in a centralized framework. Initially, the museum placed a strong emphasis on the communist period and the national liberation struggle. After the fall of communism in 1991, the museum underwent a process of reorganization and reinterpretation of its collections to offer a more objective and comprehensive perspective on Albanian history. In 2018, the museum underwent an extensive renovation and modernization process, which included adding new sections and improving the presentation of exhibits.
