History
The history of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Buenos Aires begins in 1580, when the first church was built on this site. However, the current structure dates from the 18th century, being completed in 1791 after several reconstructions. The neoclassical facade was added in 1822 by French architect Prosper Catelin. Throughout time, the cathedral has witnessed many important historical events, including the declaration of Argentina's independence in 1816. In 1942, the cathedral was declared a National Historic Monument. A significant moment in recent history was the service of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, the current Pope Francis, as Archbishop of Buenos Aires between 1998 and 2013.
