History

Melbourne Zoo was founded in 1862, making it the oldest zoo in Australia. Initially, it was designed as an acclimatization area for European domestic animals. In the 1870s, the zoo began acquiring exotic animals, including its first elephant in 1883. Throughout the 20th century, Melbourne Zoo evolved significantly, transitioning from traditional cages to naturalistic habitats. In 1989, the Trail of the Elephants was opened, an innovative habitat for Asian elephants. In 2003, the zoo introduced the 'Zoos Victoria's Fighting Extinction' program, focusing on the conservation of threatened native Australian species. Recently, Melbourne Zoo has implemented sustainability initiatives and expanded educational programs to promote biodiversity conservation.
