The square is located in the historic center of Bruges, easily accessible on foot from any point in the center. From Bruges train station, you can take buses 1, 6, 11 or 16 to the 'Markt' stop. If you're coming by car, there are several public parking lots nearby, the closest being 'Parking Biekorf' about 200m away.

Good To Know

The square is open 24/7, but most attractions and shops around it are open between 10:00 and 18:00. It's most crowded during summer and on weekends. Every Wednesday morning, there's a traditional market with local products. In winter, a picturesque Christmas market is organized here. Be careful of cyclists, who are very numerous in the area. We recommend comfortable footwear for walking on the cobblestone streets.

History

The history of the Market Square of Bruges begins in the Middle Ages when it was established as the commercial and administrative center of the city. In the 13th century, the square became the main place for trade and public events. The Belfry tower, initially built in 1240, served as an observation tower and storage for important city documents. In 1280, a major fire destroyed much of the square, but it was quickly rebuilt. During Bruges' golden age as a commercial center in the 14th-15th centuries, the square witnessed important events, including meetings of the Hanseatic League. In the 19th century, the square underwent a major renovation, giving it its current appearance. During World War II, Bruges largely escaped destruction, thus preserving the authenticity of the square. In 2000, the historic center of Bruges, including the Market Square, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
