History

Lake Komani was created in the 1980s as part of an ambitious hydroelectric project of communist Albania. The construction of the Koman dam began in 1980 and was completed in 1988, resulting in the formation of this artificial lake approximately 34 km long. Initially, the main purpose of the lake was to produce electricity, but with the opening of Albania to tourism in the 1990s, its scenic potential began to be appreciated. In the past, the lake and its surroundings were difficult to access, being used mainly by locals for transportation. However, in recent years, improvements to infrastructure and growing interest in ecotourism have transformed Lake Komani into a growing tourist destination. The ferry that crosses the lake, initially a simple means of transport for locals, has now become a tourist attraction in itself, offering one of the most picturesque water journeys in Europe.
