The Kunsthistorisches Museum was built between 1871 and 1891 at the initiative of Emperor Franz Joseph I, as part of the expansion of Vienna's Ringstrasse. Its purpose was to house the imperial art collections of the House of Habsburg, accumulated over centuries. The building was designed by architects Gottfried Semper and Carl von Hasenauer in neo-Renaissance style. The museum was officially opened in 1891, quickly becoming an important cultural center in Vienna. During World War II, the collections were evacuated and hidden for protection. After the war, the museum was restored and reopened, continuing to enrich its collections through acquisitions and donations. In 2018, the museum celebrated 125 years of existence, remaining one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in Europe.
