In the 16th century, under the reign of Ferdinand I, Hofburg became the main residence of the Habsburgs. Empress Maria Theresa added the Baroque-style Chancellery wing in the 18th century. Napoleon occupied the palace in 1805 and 1809. In the 19th century, Emperor Franz Joseph ordered the construction of the Neue Burg (New Castle) and the Michaelertrakt wing. After the fall of the monarchy in 1918, Hofburg became the seat of the Federal President of Austria, a function it still fulfills today.
