The square is open 24/7, being a public space. The best periods for visiting are spring and summer, when the terraces are open. In December, a Christmas market takes place here. Be careful of cyclists, who are very active in the area. On weekends, the square can be very crowded.

History

The history of Grote Markt dates back to the Middle Ages when it became the commercial center of Antwerp. In the 16th century, during the city's golden age, the square was rebuilt and embellished with impressive buildings. The city hall, built between 1561 and 1565, is a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture. In 1576, the square witnessed the "Spanish Fury," a tragic event in which the city was looted by Spanish troops. Throughout the centuries, Grote Markt remained the center of public and commercial life in Antwerp, hosting markets, festivities, and public executions. In the 19th century, the square was renovated and restored, maintaining its historical appearance to this day.
