History
Gravensteen Castle was built in 1180 by Count Philip of Alsace, inspired by the crusader castles he saw during the Second Crusade. Initially, it served as the seat of the Counts of Flanders, symbolizing their power and authority over the region. In the 14th century, the castle became the seat of the Council of Flanders and functioned as a court and prison. After losing its military importance, Gravensteen was used as a cotton factory in the 18th century and was nearly demolished. In 1885, the city of Ghent acquired the castle and began an extensive restoration process. The work, led by architect Joseph de Waele, was completed in 1904, restoring the castle to its medieval appearance and transforming it into a major tourist attraction.
