Graslei and Korenlei are easily accessible on foot from the center of Ghent. If you're coming by public transport, you can take tram 1 or 4 to the "Korenmarkt" stop, from where it's a short walk. Buses 3, 17, 18, 38, 39 also stop nearby. If you're coming by car, the nearest public parking is P1 Vrijdagmarkt, about a 5-minute walk away.

Graslei and Korenlei are two historic streets located along the Leie river in the center of Ghent. The best time to visit is during the day when you can admire the architecture of the historic buildings. In the evening, the area becomes lively due to numerous restaurants and bars. During summer, you can find many terraces where you can relax. Make sure you have a camera, as the area offers some of the most picturesque views in Ghent. Be careful of cyclists, as the area is popular for cycling.

History

The history of Graslei and Korenlei is closely tied to the commercial development of Ghent in the Middle Ages. Graslei, initially known as Quai aux Herbes (pronounced: kay oh zerb), functioned as the city's main port from the 11th century. Ships loaded with goods, especially herbs and spices, arrived here. Korenlei, or Quai au Blé (pronounced: kay oh blay), was the center of grain trade. In the 15th-16th centuries, these areas experienced a period of prosperity, when wealthy merchants built imposing houses along the quays. Many of the buildings we see today date from this golden age. In the 19th century, with the decline of commercial importance, the area began to transform into a tourist attraction. In the 1900s, authorities initiated restoration projects to preserve and showcase the unique architectural heritage of the area.
