History

Federation Square was conceived as an urban revitalization project in the late 1990s to mark the centenary of the Australian Federation. Construction began in 1998 and was completed in 2002, though not without controversies related to design and costs. The square was built on land previously occupied by railway buildings and government offices. Its deconstructivist design, created by Lab Architecture Studio and Bates Smart, initially sparked mixed reactions but over time has become a symbol of modern Melbourne. Throughout the years, Federation Square has hosted numerous important cultural events and has become a focal point for civic celebrations and protests.
