Design Museum Gent was founded in 1903 under the name Museum voor Sierkunst (Museum of Decorative Arts). Initially, its collection focused on Flemish and Belgian decorative arts. In 1922, the museum moved to its current location, Hotel de Coninck, an impressive Rococo-style building constructed in 1755. Over the years, the museum expanded its collection and focus, becoming an important center for contemporary and historical design. In 2002, the institution changed its name to Design Museum Gent, thus reflecting its broader orientation towards all aspects of design. The museum has undergone several renovations and expansions, the most recent being completed in 2021, which added new exhibition spaces and improved accessibility.
