History

The history of Casa Rosada begins in 1873, when it was built on the site of the former Spanish colonial fort. Initially, the building was the headquarters of the post office and government, but in 1884 it became the official residence of the president. The distinctive pink color was adopted during the presidency of Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, as a symbol of unification between rival political factions, the reds and whites. In 1910, architect Francesco Tamburini carried out a major renovation, giving the building its current appearance. Over time, Casa Rosada has witnessed crucial moments in Argentina's history, including Evita Perón's famous speech from its balcony in 1951. In 1955, the building was bombed during a coup d'état, but was later restored.
