From Bruges train station, you can take buses 1, 6, 11 or 16 to the Markt stop, from where you can walk about 3 minutes. If you're coming by car, the nearest public parking is Parking Biekorf, about 250 meters away.

Burg Square is open 24/7, being a public space. The best time to visit is early morning or late evening to avoid crowds. During winter, the square hosts a picturesque Christmas market. History

The history of Burg Square dates back to the 9th century when Count Baldwin I of Flanders built the first fortification on this site to protect the region from Viking invasions. Around the year 1000, a chapel dedicated to Saint Basil was built, which later became the Basilica of the Holy Blood. The square gained its current importance in the 12th century when it became the administrative center of the city. The Gothic Town Hall, emblematic of the square, was built in 1376, marking the height of medieval Bruges' power and prosperity. Over the centuries, the square has witnessed significant historical events, including revolts, royal ceremonies, and major political changes. Despite Bruges' economic decline in subsequent centuries, Burg Square has maintained its symbolic and architectural importance, being carefully restored and preserved to maintain its original splendor to this day.
