Schedule: daily 9:00-18:00 We recommend comfortable footwear for walking on stairs. The temperature in the bunker is lower, so it's good to have a sweater. Some exhibitions can be emotionally intense due to topics related to communist history. Photographs are allowed in most areas.

History

Bunk'Art has its origins in the nuclear paranoia of the Cold War era. Built between 1972 and 1978, this massive bunker was intended to shelter Albania's political and military elite in case of a nuclear attack. The structure, which spans five underground floors, was designed to withstand a nuclear attack and sustain life for an extended period. After the fall of the communist regime in 1991, the bunker remained abandoned for decades. In 2014, the Albanian government decided to transform this relic of the past into a cultural and educational space. The renovation project and transformation into a museum took about two years, with Bunk'Art opening its doors to the public in 2016. Since then, it has become an important symbol of Albania's efforts to confront and understand its communist past, while also providing a platform for contemporary art.
