History
The construction of Belvedere Palace began in 1714, commissioned by Prince Eugene of Savoy, a renowned military commander and patron of the arts. Architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt designed the complex in the Viennese Baroque style. The Upper Belvedere was completed in 1723, and the Lower Belvedere in 1716. After Prince Eugene's death in 1736, the palace passed into the ownership of the Habsburg imperial family. In 1781, Emperor Joseph II moved the imperial art collection to Belvedere, opening it to the public and transforming the palace into one of the world's first public museums. In 1888, the imperial collection was moved to the newly built Kunsthistorisches Museum, and Belvedere became the residence for the heir to the throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. After World War I, the palace was nationalized and transformed into a state museum, a role it maintains to this day.
