Begijnhof is open daily from 6:30 to 18:30. Visitors are asked to maintain silence, as it is a place of prayer and meditation. Photography is allowed outside, but not inside the buildings. Modest dress is recommended as a sign of respect. The best time to visit is in spring when the inner courtyard is full of blooming daffodils.

History

The Begijnhof in Bruges was established in 1245 by Margaret of Constantinople, Countess of Flanders. Initially, it served as a refuge for beguines, women who wanted to live a religious life without becoming nuns. During the Reformation and the French Revolution, the Begijnhof went through difficult periods but survived. In 1927, the last beguine left the complex, and it was taken over by Benedictine nuns. In 1998, the Begijnhof was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Flemish beguinages. Over the centuries, the complex has been renovated and restored several times, while maintaining its original character and historical significance.
