History

The Basilica of the Holy Blood was originally built in 1134 as a chapel of the residence of the Count of Flanders. Legend has it that in 1150, after the second crusade, Count Thierry of Alsace brought a relic of the Holy Blood of Jesus Christ to Bruges. This relic quickly transformed the chapel into an important pilgrimage site. In the 15th-16th centuries, the original chapel was rebuilt in the Flamboyant Gothic style, giving rise to the structure we see today. During the French Revolution, the basilica suffered significant damage but was restored in the 19th century. In 1923, Pope Pius XI granted the building the title of minor basilica, thus recognizing its historical and religious importance.
