History

The history of the Albertina Museum begins in 1776, when Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen founded the collection. Initially, it was housed in his palace in Bratislava but was moved to Vienna in 1795. In 1919, after the fall of the Habsburg monarchy, the collection became the property of the Austrian state. During World War II, the museum suffered significant damage but was restored and reopened in 1953. A major renovation took place between 2000 and 2003, modernizing the facilities and expanding the exhibition space. In 2008, the museum expanded its collection to include modern and contemporary art, consolidating its position as one of the most important cultural institutions in Europe.
