History
The history of the Acropolis of Athens spans millennia. The first traces of habitation date back to the Neolithic period, but its major importance begins in the Mycenaean period (1600-1100 BC) when it was used as a fortress. In the 6th century BC, under the leadership of Pisistratus, the Acropolis became an important religious center. Its architectural peak was reached in the 5th century BC, under Pericles, when the most famous buildings were constructed, including the Parthenon. In the following centuries, the Acropolis underwent multiple transformations and deteriorations, being used as a Byzantine fortress, Latin palace, and Ottoman mosque. In 1687, an explosion in the Turkish ammunition depot caused significant damage to the Parthenon. Modern restorations began in the 19th century and continue to the present day, with the Acropolis being declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
