History
Achilleion Palace was built in 1890 at the request of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who was fascinated by Greek mythology and especially by the hero Achilles. After Elisabeth's assassination in 1898, the palace was purchased by Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany in 1907. During World War I, the palace was used as a military hospital. After the war, it was ceded to the Greek state as part of war reparations. In World War II, it was occupied by Italian and German forces. After the war, the palace was abandoned for a period until the Greek government decided to restore it and open it to the public in 1994. Since then, Achilleion has become a museum and a major tourist attraction, keeping alive the memory of Empress Elisabeth and the fascinating history of this place.
