History
798 Art District has its origins in the 1950s when the area was developed as a state-owned industrial complex, built in collaboration with East Germany. Factory 798, which gave the district its name, initially produced electronic equipment for the military. The distinctive architecture, inspired by the Bauhaus style, was designed by East German architects. In the 1990s, with the decline of industry, many of the factories were abandoned. Starting in 2002, artists and designers began to occupy the empty spaces, attracted by low rents and unique architecture. In 2003, the first art gallery opened, and the area began to attract more and more artists and visitors. Despite initial threats of demolition, the district's growing success and popularity led authorities to officially recognize it as a cultural zone in 2006. Since then, 798 Art District has continuously developed, becoming a symbol of the contemporary art scene in Beijing and China.
